Farm Animals For All Ages
We have fun learning about farm animals. It’s a great subject that can span many different ages. Here are some ideas for different age ranges, but try not to get caught up in the age and focus on your child’s personal development. Each child develops different skills in varying order and time. And that’s one of the things which makes them wonderful and unique!
Ages 0-2: Create a sensory basket with the Safari Ltd Farm Toob. Start by letting your child explore the animals alone. Let him feel the texture, look at the colors and observe the differences. Next, hand him the animal and say the name of the animal. This step can last for days or weeks. Each child learns at a different pace and it’s important not to rush it. Last, ask for an animal by name and see if he can hand it to you. After the names are learned, you can move onto the sounds each animal makes.
Ages 2-4: Print out the free Farm Animal Nomenclature cards from Montessori for Everyone. Place the cards (only the ones with the photo and name on the same card) in a basket with the Safari Ltd Farm Toob. Demonstrate how to match the toy to the card and observe your child working. Try not to interfere…even if he’s making the wrong match. Give him time to problem solve for himself.
Ages 5-6: Print out the free Farm Animal Nomenclature cards from Montessori for Everyone. Place all the cards in a basket with the Safari Ltd Farm Toob. Demonstrate how to line up all of the control cards first. Then, match the photos. Next, match the text. Lastly, match the Farm Animal toys. This helps letter recognition and gets your child ready to read.
Ages 6-7: Print out the free Farm Animal Family Nomenclature Cards from Montessori Moments. Demonstrate how to line up all of the control cards first. Then, match the photos. Next, match the text. This material helps further develop your child’s language skills and vocabulary.
