We’re back from our Florida vacation and I’m now knee-deep in planning.  I’m finishing up my printables for our Grammar Farm, brain-storming about our solar system unit, creating a store for my printables, re-building my career….

Lots of work is going on over here.  I’m actually trying not to get overwhelmed by it all.  I keep telling myself to take baby steps and breathe.  Do you ever have to tell yourself that?

Next week, the boys will attend a vacation bible camp in the mornings and I’m really looking forward to having that time to plan our next school year.  How are you guys doing?  Do you have your 2013-2014 school year all planned?  Or are you still trudging along like me?

Tomorrow, I’ll be telling you about what all the cool kids are doing. {You might be one of them.}

A friend of mine told me she was easing into summer, which made me realize we did a huge cannon ball into ours. Sunday, the kids and I jumped in the car for a spontaneous beach vacation. It might be one of the craziest things I’ve ever done, but we survived the 15 hours in the car and spent all day yesterday at the beach and pool.

It was Lila’s first time at the beach and she worked so hard to wiggle her little body so she could reach the sand. I have a feeling she’ll be eating sand by the end of the week. John Robert experimented with the mechanics of the sand toys and jumped the waves, but it was my sweet Asher who captured my attention the most. He was so content in his activity. He worked diligently, carrying his large bucket back-and-forth between the ocean and the hole he dug in the sand. He did this over and over again, at least 30 times. It reminded me of Maria Montessori’s theory of how repetition of actions supports the child in perfecting their skills.

These kids of mine may take a lot of time and attention, but they are worth all I have to give…and then some. This beach vacation has reminded me of that. Sending you a little saltwater and sunshine. XO, Lori

Avoiding the Summer Slide

{Summer Fun Learning Supplies Ready to be Used!}

Summer is here!  Do you have fun vacations planned?  Or do you have equally fun plans of sleeping in and having lazy days at the pool?  We definitely have plans of doing both, but I also plan on fitting in some laid back learning.  Many kids experience the “summer slide,” where they slide backwards in their education during the long summer break.  It’s hard to retain all the information when they aren’t using it frequently.  Plus as a homeschool family, I enjoy sticking with some sort of a routine during the summer to make the school year transition easier.  We’re catching up on a few items we missed during the year and adding a few fun extensions.  Some of it is simply doing a page in a workbook once a day.  To avoid the ”summer slide” you may choose to do a little laid back learning of your own.

Here’s what we’re doing:

Art:  Trips to the local Museums

Geography:  Road Trip USA & Postcard Swap

Language Arts:  Language Arts: Grade 1 (JR only) & Montessori Grammar/Grammar Farm

Math:  Mathematical Reasoning Level B (JR only)

PE:  Swim Classes & Gymnastics

ReadingRead Your Way into 2nd Grade (JR only) & Asher’s Library Picks

Science:  Montessori-Inspired Solar System Unit

Vacation Fun: Summer Passport

Our summer vacation officially starts on Monday and I’m taking a blog break next week to spend some quality vacation time with my kids.  I hope you guys have a great first week of summer break and I’ll see you back here on the 17th.

My Montessori Journey

Montessori MOMents Copyright 2013

My Montessori Journey began a long time ago, 26 years ago to be exact. I was entering 2nd grade and my parents enrolled me in a Private Montessori School. I remember the freedom of choosing my own work. I remember spending hours reading in a bean bag chair and doing math I chose for myself, alongside my friend. I was only able to attend the Montessori School for two years before I enrolled in public school, but this time shaped me and I wish I had a Montessori Education from the very beginning.

Fast forward 19 years, to the day my firstborn entered preschool. I received a recommendation for a small Montessori Preschool in the area and met the directress. I instantly fell in love with the atmosphere, the materials and her philosophy. The flame inside me was once again reignited. I enrolled John Robert in Montessori and watched him blossom. He was learning, loving learning and initiating it on his own.

John Robert spent that first year experimenting with the sound object boxes, learning to set the table, configuring the triangle box and much more. I loved the parent observation nights where he would present his work to me and I could oooo and ahhh over his hard work. I was content with his preschool, but I missed him and Asher so much during the day. The evenings seemed to get shorter-and-shorter and it was consumed with dinner, bath, brushing teeth, saying prayers and bedtime. It didn’t seem to be the quality time I so much desired.

Letters to Lila

IMG_7556_2

Here’s Lila in her adorable Cherry Blossom shoes from Sweet Seasons Designs. I purchased these shoes back before Lila was even born, so it’s so fun to see them on her chubby little feet now. Having two boys and now a little girl has made my heart so content. It seems as though this was God’s plan for me all along. Shortly after Lila was born, I decided to create a little blog just for her. It really wasn’t meant to be anything more than letters from me to her, but somehow it’s already become larger than that. I had no intention of sharing it with anyone since it seemed slightly personal and private. Even so, people have found it on their own and people I don’t even know are following the blog. I guess there’s something in my letters that these readers need to hear right now. For now, I’m going to leave it public and I can always turn it private later if I feel the need to.  I hope one day when Lila’s a teenager and I can do nothing right (we all know that day will come), she will read my Letters to Lila and be reminded of how much I love her.

You’re probably noticing that things look a little different around here. The blog has had a long overdue makeover. I still have a little work to do, but you’re getting a good glimpse into the new and approved Montessori MOMents. The new family portraits were taken by Lanay Swanson and I keep falling in love with them over and over again. There’s also a new “All About Us” Section in the menu bar above, where you can learn a little more about what makes us who we are.

To help us celebrate the new blog design, Sweet Seasons Designs is offering a giveaway.  When Lila was born, I had so much fun searching out the cutest baby girl stuff.  I searched on Etsy a lot, because I love supporting small businesses and people who take pride in hand-made products.  Also, a lot of the sellers on Etsy are moms (just like us) who are working hard to help support their families.  It just seems like a noble cause to purchase from them instead of a big box retailer.

One of the shops I fell in love with is Sweet Seasons Designs.  It was her shoes that drew me to her shop, but she also makes burp cloths and blankets.  Today, she’s giving away the most adorable Spring Inspired Flannel Shoes to one lucky winner.  Don’t they look so soft and comfy!?

Get ready, because I’m going to give you a lot of ways to enter…

  1. Visit Sweet Seasons Designs and comment with your favorite shop item.
  2. Like Sweet Seasons Designs on Facebook and leave a separate comment.
  3. Like Montessori MOMents on Facebook and leave a separate comment.
  4. Tweet about the giveaway and leave a comment with your handle:  “Win baby shoes from Sweet Seasons Designs. http://tinyurl.com/lnrzhwm @lorimoments #giveaway #win #baby”
  5. Post online anywhere and leave a comment with a link to where you posted it.

***Remember to enter a separate comment for each entry or you won’t get credit for it!  This giveaway is open for USA shipping only.  The giveaway ends Monday, June 10 at 8:00pm CST.  Thanks in advance to everyone who will help me support this small business.  Good luck everyone!***

Friendly Monsters Preschool Unit

IT’S SUMMER!!!!! I taught preschool for the last time yesterday and in honor of our last day of preschool, I held a Monster Themed Pajama Party. I started out by creating a “Monster Pancake Bar” of cut up strawberries, bananas, blueberries and chocolate chips. I then decorated an example “Monster Pancake” so the kids had a good idea of how it can look. The kids all arrived in their pj’s and went straight for the pancakes. They did such a good job decorating them and it was so much fun to see their creativity.

Next, we did our circle time where we discussed Monsters. We all decided that Monsters are in fact pretend. I told them even if they’re pretend, sometimes it’s fun to make pretend monsters, especially nice monsters. We read two fantastic books about Monsters: Monsters vs. Kittens and Monsters Love Colors.

After circle & story time, we had 3 fun Monster Art Projects. I wish I had pictures of them actually making the art, but when you’re helping 5 children with 3 art projects all on your own, there just isn’t time to take pictures. After we finished, I popped some popcorn and the kids sat down to watch a little of Monsters Inc while they waited for their parents to pick them up. I knew they would only get to see about 15 minutes of it, but I needed the time to clean up, pack up their stuff and gather my thoughts before pick-up. It was the wildest preschool yet, but they also were the most focused at some points and really worked hard on their workbooks.

I’m so ready for summer to be here! We have plans of pool hopping, beach bathing, picnic taking and museum strolling. I’m also gathering ideas for our summer bucket list on Pinterest.

Are you ready for summer!?!?!?

May Flowers Craft

Flower CraftThis is a very simple arts & craft project we used in preschool when we studied flowers.  It also costs literally nothing to make.  I had all of these items on hand.  I bet a lot of you do too.

Materials:
1 solid piece of colored cardstock for every 2 children
1 patterned piece of paper for every 2 children
1 cupcake liner per child
glue stick
safety scissors

Instructions:

  1. Cut each piece of colored & patterned paper in half.
  2. Draw dashed lines dividing the paper into fourths for the children to cut along.
  3. Ask the children to cut along the dashed lines.
  4. Show the children how to lay the paper in a radial pattern, gluing the center of the paper rectangles together. We placed the solid paper in the back and the patterned paper on top.  Hint – This is a great time to teach them about radial symmetry.
  5. Glue the cupcake liner in the center.
  6. Voila! A May Flower!

Montessori-Inspired Preschool Flower Unit

IMG-7362_2

We had a short preschool mini-unit at our house the other week.  It was only one day, but we had just enough time to learn a little bit about flowers.  I made a practical life tray where the kids threaded flower petals onto a string.  This tray was prepared by taking apart a dollar store lei.  (They have lots of leis in the stores right now for summer parties.)  I tied one of the flower petals onto the end of the string to prevent the child from pulling it all the way through the string and off the other side.

I also made a counting circle from a paper plate, which the kids loved.  I think I’ll be making many more of these.  I divided the paper plate to where it looks like pizza slices and then drew various numbers of flowers on each slice.  Next, I wrote the corresponding numbers on the clothes pins and the kids pin the correct number on the correlating slice.  This helps the child with coordination, pincer grasp and counting.

We also read a lot of books about flowers.  Ava’s Poppy, Planting a Rainbow and my personal favorite: One Little Seed.  I also have a really cute and easy arts & crafts project that I’ll try to share with you tomorrow.

If you want to take your flower education even further, here are some other great ideas:

  1. Discovery Days and Montessori Moments has two wonderful Botany posts:  Stem Week and Flowers.
  2. Montessori Print Shop has Parts of a Flower 3-Part Cards, a Flower Nomenclature BookPollination & Seed Dispersal Cards and FREE Seed & Plant Matching Cards.
  3. Living Montessori NOW has Montessori-Inspired Flower Activities and Free Flower Printables and Montessori-Inspired Flower Math Activities.

I hope you guys are having a great week.  It’s been a little crazy over here, but I’m really working on simplifying my life and letting go of some of my high expectations.  I’m vowing to take care of myself a little bit more.  I think as moms, we get so caught up in caring for everyone else that we forget to care for ourselves.  Or at least I do.  I hope you’ll take a MOMent for yourself this week.  You deserve it.
