Montessori-Inspired Winter Materials

{Asher transferring Emperor Penguins one month before he turned 3.}

For the first time this winter, I can feel the ice in the air.  Brrrrr.  It got me thinking about the winter materials we have used in the past and what I should add to our shelves this year.  Here are a few of our “winter” favorites.

  1. Sifting Snowflakes
  2. Spooning Snowballs
  3. Transferring Emperor Penguins
  4. Martin Luther King, Jr Day
  5. Crystalized Snowflakes

If you have time, help me out.  Share a link to your favorite winter themed learning you’ve done, no matter how long ago it was.  I’d love to see what’s working with your kids.

How’s winter treating you?

      Stephanie, you are the queen of themed trays. I loved all of those ideas and I’m going to copy them if that’s ok with you. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

        I would love to have your use the ideas! It makes it feel like its worth the work when someone else can use the ideas too! Esspecially since Pup was less then impressed with most of it! :) She really is just not interested in practical life work at all (except for the playdough of course). Have fun!

    Wonderful ideas. I am going to try the “sifting snow” with Aarya today. I do not have snowflakes (:() and nothing shaped like them, so I will be putting alphabets (or something I find ) win it for him to find. I really wanted some simple activities for our Winter theme because we are just starting our tot school :) (He is 33 months and thank you for the inspiration)

    Lovely idea’s, thank you! Where did you purchase those little penguins from?

    • Lori says:

      Thanks Hayley. They’re from Oriental Trading Company. They have an online site where they have tons of erasers and beads in all different shapes. Some of the units include a lot of pieces though. In that case I always see if some friends want to split it with me.

    I remember this! I think I’ll update some of Holden’s stuff this week! Thanks for the great ideas because they’re perfect for his age now.
