I love teaching my children with the Montessori method as much as anyone else, but I also understand how expensive it can be. That’s why I love mixing my purchased Montessori materials with free printables and DIY materials. I’ve been wanting the Number Rods for our classroom for a while now, but I haven’t had the time to make them myself. Then, I came across an easy way to create a similar material for free.
To create this work, I printed the free Number Rods Control Chart from Montessori Print Shop. {You can find even more free printables by clicking here.} I cut it apart and laminated the numbers and the rods. It can also be used with sandpaper numbers if you have them. It was a breeze for John Robert (5), but it will be a while before Asher (2.5) masters them.

I tried the paper or rather card stock number rods, it never appealed to D. Then I bought some trim and painted my own wooden number rods, but by the time I got done, I think it was past D’s sensitive period! At least I would get some use out of it for M!
My boys like the paper rods so far. Only time will tell if it will continue to be used often. I’ve been wanting to paint my own wooden rods, but you know how time is limited. I’d love to see your rods. Do you have a post about them? Please share. :)
