Writing with a Feather

Before we get started, here’s a little background story on how old JR thinks I am.  When we were in the hospital after Asher was born, JR pointed at the land line phone and said, “What’s that?”  I explained to him that before cell phones were invented, we all used land lines.  Isn’t that crazy?  He didn’t know what a land line was!  May be he’s right.  May be I am old.  That being said, this is what JR asked me today about writing with feathers…

Me:  “Let’s write with a feather like they did a long, long time ago.”

JR:  “Did you write with a feather when you were little?”

Me:  “No, they wrote with feathers a LONG, LONG time ago, before any of us were even born.  By the time I was born, pens were invented.”

JR:  “Oh.” {accompanied by a disappointed sigh}

Both of the boys ADORED this activity.  They even enjoyed it more than the Pudding Letter Tracing, which was totally unexpected.  JR wrote random letters, his name and my name.  Asher wrote circles and squiggly lines, and worked on his pencil grasp.

If that smile doesn’t sell you on this activity, I don’t know what will…

Now…if only I could find out a way to present this on a tray for our shelf.  I don’t think I quite trust my little mess maker with a bottle of ink…

Supplies for this activity:

  • Go on a nature hunt for feathers to bring home.
  • Ink (ours was purchased at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon and has a dropper to allow just a small amount to be distributed to the child)
  • Small container to use as an ink well (we repurposed soda bottle caps)
  • Paper (we used cardstock to make sure the ink didn’t soak through onto our desk)

I bet your children would really love writing like they did a long, long time ago…you know, like when WE were little…

  1. Awesome activity! Yea.. I would not trust my little ones with ink in our house either! May be in a tiled area somewhere else in your house would work?

As always I love the picture of your boys! Love that little tongue out picture with Asher! Can I just say I am jealous of their lashes! Why do boys get such pretty lashes?!!

    • Lori says:

I agree. It’s always the boys that get the long lashes and they don’t even care about them. I wish I could say they got them from me, but I’d be lying. :)

  2. Sandra says:

That’s great. I am creating a unit study dealing with communication and Quills and Ink are both included. I would love to link to this blog from the squidoo review page.

    • Lori says:

Thanks Sandra. A Communications Unit sounds like fun. I’m probably a little behind the times…but what is the squidoo review page? Is it the Homeschool Webring that comes up as your url?

  3. Could you dilute some washable tempura paint for a shelf presentation?

  4. Amy says:

So fun! I’ve never tried that…although I like calligraphy pens a lot and wish that was still one of our modern arts ;)
